Paper Title: Rigs-to-Reef: An Innovative and Sustainable Solution to Decommissioning of Offshore Steel Structures
Assoc Prof Dr Noor Amila Wan Abdullah Zawawi
MSSA / Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP)
The construction and development of 400 plus offshore structures in Malaysia is fast approaching its sunset days with 22 platforms due for decommissioning over the next 5 years. This presents the opportunity and also a challenge to manage several thousand tonnes of steel that will go into waste disposal; this is however not the most efficient solution. An alternative to disposal would be the repurposing of these decommissioned structures as a reefing growth site at designated reefing locations. This would be a synergistic opportunity to develop our national reefs, food sources, manage decommissioning responsibly as well as optimizing the asset decommissioning challenge faced by operators, regulators and the public alike.Success stories from the Baram-8, Dana and D30 offshore platforms will be shared during the presentation.
Associate Professor Dr Noor Amila Wan Abdullah Zawawi, or affectionately known as Amila Zawawi. She is currently holding the office of Director, Institute of Self-Sustainable Building. She obtained her MSc and PhD from Malaysia in Building Engineering & Built Environment. Prior to this post, she was Head of Department Civil & Environmental Engineering. She has 18 years of academic experience, with researches related to offshore platforms decommissioning. Amila is the lead researcher of the Decommissioning Initiatives division, at the Offshore Engineering Centre, UTP. She provides training on decommissioning to the industry in Malaysia and South Korea, working closely with various industry/university collaborators, PETRONAS and NPOs & NGOs in Malaysia. Dr Amila has published over 70 articles on her research findings, and is passionate about championing the development of local capability in decommissioning. Her current focus is discovering sustainable solutions for decommissioning in South East Asia, particularly rigs to reef as a viable solution.
