Paper Title: Rigs-to-Reef: An Innovative and Sustainable Solution to Decommissioning of Offshore Steel Structures

Speaker:

Assoc Prof Dr Noor Amila Wan Abdullah Zawawi

MSSA / Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP)

Synopsis

The construction and development of 400 plus offshore structures in Malaysia is fast approaching its sunset days with 22 platforms due for decommissioning over the next 5 years. This presents the opportunity and also a challenge to manage several thousand tonnes of steel that will go into waste disposal; this is however not the most efficient solution. An alternative to disposal would be the repurposing of these decommissioned structures as a reefing growth site at designated reefing locations. This would be a synergistic opportunity to develop our national reefs, food sources, manage decommissioning responsibly as well as optimizing the asset decommissioning challenge faced by operators, regulators and the public alike.Success stories from the Baram-8, Dana and D30 offshore platforms will be shared during the presentation.
