ABOUT THE COURSE
The purpose of this short course is to give steel structures players especially design engineers an overview of the design of portal frame based on EuroCode EC3. In this short course, both design methods based on elastic analysis and plastic analysis will be addressed. The theoretical background and examples of the design will be given. Majority of the use of steelwork in structural building construction is in the primary framework of single storey buildings. The steel portal frame has become the most common structural form, because of its economy and versatility for a wide range of spans. The primary feature of portal frame is flexibility of planning which, in general terms, means as few columns as possible consistent with economy. The ability to provide spans up to 50 m using conventional hot-rolled sections, gives a popular structural form for the factories, warehouse, sport complex and supermarkets. Therefore it is very important for engineers to understand and have the capability of designing hot-rolled steel sections based on the standard.
Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Hanim Osman is a Professor at the Department of Structures and Materials, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is currently the Director of the Forensic Engineering Centre. Besides teaching and supervision as the core responsibility, he is also active in research and consultancies in specialized areas related to civil engineering and construction, in particular concrete and structural steel analysis, design, assessment, and failure investigation. He is a senior fellow member of Civil Engineering Testing Unit (CETU). His current research interest is cold-formed steel design and construction and experimental method. Dr. Mohd Hanim holds B.Eng.(Civil)(Hon.) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, M.Sc. (Structural Eng.) from University of Surrey, and Ph.D (Structural Eng.) from University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom. He is a member of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia and a Professional Engineer with Board of Engineers Malaysia
